HUSEYNOV, LATIF (1964–)

Azerbaijani lawyer. Huseynov studied law at Kiev State University and became professor of international public law at Baku State University in 2002. Currently, he is the president of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

HUSEYNOV, MEHMAN (1989–)

Azerbaijani blogger and human rights activist. Huseynov was born in Baku and studied at the Azerbaijani State University of Economics. His SANCAQ Production Facebook group disseminated information criticizing the regime’s policy and social problems in Azerbaijan. On the eve of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Baku in 2012 and the presidential election in October 2013, Huseynov launched an agitation campaign criticizing human rights shortcomings in the republic. Authorities reacted with the arrest and investigation of Huseynov. In January 2017, Huseynov was accused of hooliganism, arrested, and jailed. He is the brother of human rights activist and political exile Emin Huseynov. See also CIVIL SOCIETY.
